Young, obese children may have higher asthma risk

Posted On Wed, February 29, 2012

Kaiser Permanente Southern California released a study showing that those young people who are obese have a greater risk to develop asthma than healthier children.

In addition to having the connection between the two illnesses, the study noted that children who have both conditions are more likely to make frequent visits to the doctor compared to healthier children. Hispanic children had a more direct connection between the two illnesses than other groups, including African-Americans.

"This research contributes to the growing evidence that there is a relationship between childhood obesity and asthma, and suggests that factors related to race and ethnicity, particularly for Hispanic youth, may modify this relationship," said Dr. Mary Helen Black of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California department of research and evaluation and lead author of the study.

Consumers who want to assure their families are properly insured may want to compare health insurance quotes. There are many options to choose from online, and a person may be able to find a plan that fits their needs, helping to put their mind at ease.
