Wyoming, Colorado homeowners file 50,000 claims after hailstormsPosted On Wed, July 20, 2011
Tornadoes, floods and wildfires have caused hundreds of thousands of insurance claim filings in 2011 and hail is the latest batch of wild weather homeowners have been the recipients of.
Hailstorms have been particularly prevalent in Wyoming and Colorado, as according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, nearly 50,000 home insurance claims have been filed in the two states in the past week.
The RMIIA reports the destruction totals are estimated to be close to $165 million, mostly resulting from damage done to homes and automobiles.
"Mother Nature reminded us last week that severe weather season is still in full swing in the Rocky Mountain Region," said Carole Walker, executive director of the RMIIA. "It's important for all of us to be talking to our insurance representatives to make sure we are protected and have the coverage we need - especially during these peak months for catastrophic weather."
According to the Hail Reporter, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association receives between 10,000 and 12,000 reports of hail occurring around the country annually.
While shopping for cheap insurance quotes, homeowners may want to visit the Insurance Information Institute's website to learn how they can protect their homes from hail.
