Wisconsin 25th state to ban texting while driving

Posted On Mon, May 10, 2010

Last week, Wisconsin followed in the footsteps of half the states in the nation, becoming the 25th one to make it illegal to engage in text messaging while driving.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle signed the legislation into law on Wedensday, making it the sixth state so far this year to pass a texting ban. The American Automobile Association, an adamant supporter of the ban, believes more states will follow suit.

"Texting while driving is associated with significant physical and cognitive distractions and the proliferation of the practice is endangering all users of our nation's roadways," AAA president and CEO Robert Darbelnet said. "Surveys show the overwhelming majority of Americans agree that this behavior is dangerous and they support text messaging bans."

Research from the Auto Club of Southern California has shown the benefits associated with state laws banning texting while driving, according to AAA. The study found that the number of drivers texting dropped 70 percent in Orange County during the first six months after it was enacted.

Texting is one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving and can result in fatal car accidents. Reducing auto crashes could possibly lead to less expensive auto insurance premiums.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19768693-ADNFCR
