Wintry conditions expected to strand millions of motoristsPosted On Fri, December 17, 2010
While Thanksgiving is cited as the most traveled holiday in the country, many will be taking to the roads in celebration of Christmas and New Year's. It's important for those taking trips to ensure their vehicles are ready for the winter elements.
AAA estimates more than 1.4 million people will become stranded at some point between December 18 and January 2. Snow and cold weather will be the main culprits.
"Whether on your way to grandma's house or the mall for last-minute shopping, car trouble can quickly dampen your holiday spirit," says AAA vice president Marshall Doney.
It's a good idea for motorists to equip their vehicle with an emergency kit. Jumper cables, non-perishable foods, water, blankets and a flashlight are just a few items that can help tide vehicle occupants over until help arrives, should they become stranded.
Having auto insurance is also a must for people driving in winter weather. In the event of an accident, the coverage can help pay for repairs or a rental car should severe damage occur.
