Winter fires highlight need for home insurancePosted On Fri, December 10, 2010
With snow falling in many regions of the country, people are beginning to turn up the heat in their homes. With the increased use of heating sources comes a higher risk of fires, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Given that many home fires occur each year, it's important for homeowners to protect their investment with insurance. III vice president Loretta Worters says many disasters are covered under a standard policy.
"Damage caused by fire and smoke are covered under standard homeowners and renters insurance policies," said Worters. "Homeowners are also covered for water or other damage caused by fire fighters working to extinguish the blaze."
In addition to space heaters and cooking appliances, other sources can also start a fire. During the holiday season, it's common for people to light candles, have special decorations and have a tree indoors, all of which can make it easy for a large blaze to erupt.
Ensuring a tree has plenty of water and that candles are not left unattended can help reduce the likelihood of a fire starting.
