Wind damage covered by homeowners' insurance

Posted On Tue, June 8, 2010

While many in the Midwest that live under the constant threat of losing their home to a tornado, they can breathe easier if they have basic homeowner's insurance.

Most homeowners' insurance policies cover wind damage, according to a report in the Bowling Green (Ohio) Sentinel-Tribune. Homeowners only have to make basic temporary repairs like patching holes in the roof to avoid further damage.

But the paper recommends that homeowners whose houses are damaged by tornados first document the damage it caused so that their insurance companies can see the conditions in the immediate aftermath of the storm. One insurance company employee told the paper that homeowners shouldn't authorize any repairs until the insurance company gives them the go-ahead.

The article also says that homeowners should familiarize themselves with their insurance policies to find out whether they cover the entire value of their home or just the cost of repairs and replacements.

The Jacksonville (Illinois) Journal Courier also says that preparation is important in tornado season. Homeowners should always have a home safety plan. In Illinois alone, there are an average of 43 tornadoes a year.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19825761-ADNFCR
