Wildfires force hundreds to evacuate homesPosted On Mon, August 30, 2010
It can be easy to have a love/hate relationship with Mother Nature. While living in certain climates affords beautiful surroundings, they can bring dangers as well.
A recent spread of wildfires in California highlights the importance of having homeowners insurance. The state reports more than 2,000 acres have been burned by the fires, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate their homes.
California insurance commissioner Steve Poizner is encouraging residents to call the Department of Insurance if there is any question as to what their insurance should be covering.
"Anyone who has been forced to evacuate their home due to the fires in Kern County should check their insurance policies," said Poizner. "Many homeowners' policies cover additional living expenses that result from mandatory evacuations - including hotel stays and extra food costs."
As with most forms of insurance, there are a variety of coverage levels people can chose from for covering their home. Protecting a home against a disaster is a wise choice for many people, especially if it's a family's biggest asset.
