Where is America's 'safest' city?

Posted On Fri, June 24, 2011

With a bevy of environmental disasters occurring throughout the country and the world over the past several months, MSNBC.com recently posed the question: "Is there any place that's safe?"

"Safe is a relative term," said Julie Rochman, president of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. "What do you want to be safe from?"

In other words, as other sources tell the national news website, no part of the country is immune to environmental disaster.

"Every place has its own inherent risks," said Mark Newell, spokesman with the U.S. Geological Survey. "If you put a place on a map I can tell you two to three consequences of living there."

The solution, according to Newell, is to adjust to the environmental disasters that are prevalent in a particular region of the country and to obtain home insurance coverage.

Home insurance plans vary from provider to provider. For instance, some policies may include coverage for earthquakes, which are fairly common on the West Coast, while others may require that to purchased separately.
