What homeowners should do in the aftermath of a stormPosted On Tue, May 31, 2011
As thousands of homeowners throughout the south clean up after a devastating swath of tornadoes destroyed dozens of communities, many people will not be able to replace what was lost.
According to a 2008 study cited by the USA Today in a recent article, 96 percent of homeowners carry insurance, but 64 percent of those home insurance policies lack the funds necessary to cover all of the repair and replacement costs.
To avoid this, the newspaper reports homeowners should review their home insurance policies to see what plan they have, which will generally fall under one of three categories - extended, replacement or guaranteed. In an interview with the paper, the managing editor of an insurance comparison website says guaranteed is the most comprehensive plan.
Once homeowners have determined what kind of plan they have, the paper reports homeowners should do an inventory of what personal effects have been damaged. The source states that insurance organizations like the National Association of Insurance Commissioners offers a free app to iPhone users at the company's website.
The Insurance Information Institute says homeowners should be sure to make two copies of the inventory - one for the owner, the other for the insurance adjuster.
