Ways to prevent insurance claims in the winterPosted On Tue, January 11, 2011
Watch the latest weather forecast. Check your tire pressure. Know when your car battery was last installed. Simple steps like these can prevent you from a whole lot of frustration as the cold winter weather settles over most of the country.
With tips like these, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is trying to save their clients - and themselves - some money by reminding them of the steps they can take now to protect their cars from the damage the winter weather tends to cause.
"As the freezing and thawing of the winter season progresses, there are preventative steps customers can take to protect their investments," said Ken Enscoe, director of catastrophe claims operations at Nationwide. "
Including the aforementioned, other preventative steps Nationwide advises taking include cleaning the headlights prior to heading out, keeping the gas tank at least half-full at all times to prevent fuel-line freeze-up and checking the exhaust pipe for snow and ice blockages.
Auto insurance claims tend to rise in the winter months, as 1.5 million car accidents per year are due to weather, according to the National Research Council.
