Walnuts may reduce breast cancer risks

Posted On Thu, September 8, 2011

A recent report found that walnut consumption can potentially slow the development and growth of breast cancer tumors in lab mice, according to the California Walnut Commission.

The report, which was published in Nutrition and Cancer, found that giving the equivalent of two ounces of the nut to a human each day could potentially help limit cancer growth. This is important, as those mice who received walnuts through their mother while still in the womb, and consumed them throughout their life received breast cancer at a much lower rate. The other group, which was fed with corn oil products, had cancer at the regular rate.

"We need studies like this that look at the impact of whole foods and not just isolated nutrients," said Karen Collins, nutrition advisor to the American Institute for Cancer Research. "For example, walnuts are a nutrient dense package of protective compounds such as antioxidants, phytosterols and plant-based omega-3 fat that work in harmony."

Better nutrition as a whole may improve health. Consumers may want to examine their options when it comes to health insurance rates, especially if they are at risk for a disease such as breast cancer.
