Toyota Prius surpasses one million units sold in the U.S.Posted On Wed, April 6, 2011
Toyota - a car company that's seen manufacturing troubles after the recent earthquake and recall crisis - finally has some good news to report: It's sold over one million Priuses in the U.S.
Bob Carter, vice president and general manager of Toyota Division group, said that while this is a great moment for the company, the Prius has long been atop the hybrid car market.
"Since the Prius went on sale 11 years ago, not a year has gone by when it hasn't been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S.," Carter said. "Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid and as we see fuel prices starting to rise again, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year."
The carmaker estimates that since its 2000 debut, the Prius has saved Americans approximately $2.19 billion in gasoline costs.
The Prius has also likely saved people money on their auto insurance premiums, as the 2010 model performed well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash tests. The 2011 model has not yet been tested.
