Tornadoes ravage Mississippi

Posted On Thu, April 29, 2010

Many of the southern states were devastated by hurricanes over the weekend, and Mississippi was no exception.

The southern state sustained tens of millions of dollars in damages, Reuters reports. The weekend tornadoes took the lives of ten Mississippi residents and destroyed close to 700 area homes in the worst storms the state has seen in years. Two people in Alabama died as well, according to Reuters.

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency, and now clean-up begins for the state's residents and local workforce. Mike Chaney, the Mississippi insurance commissioner, told Reuters that he estimated damages to be more than $50 million for the area's farm buildings, shopping centers, and cars. "What we saw on the ground was miles of destruction," Chaney told Reuters. "The tornado never left the ground. It meandered like a snake."

Yazoo County was the most hard-hit in Mississippi, Reuters said. Fortunately, 90 percent of the county's houses carried home insurance.
