Tornado season can be unpredictable

Posted On Fri, March 2, 2012

The tornado season in the United States can be tricky, and it is hard to prepare for such a phantom storm, according to InsuranceJournal.com.

The storms begin to appear during early March, and can be quite frequent during the summer months. However, they are harder to detect and predict than any other major storms, including hurricanes, the news source noted. Other storms are able to give fair warning - usually a couple of days in advance - but tornadoes can be as little as a few minutes.

"A lot of things have to come together at once to have a tornadic storm and the skill at forecasting all those things is near zero," Howard Bluestein, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, told the news source. "They are definitely more unpredictable."

Consumers who live in disaster areas may want to make sure their insurance situations are straightened out. While disaster insurance is typically separate, it is important to make sure traditional home insurance is sufficient. This can be done by comparing home insurance quotes.
