Tool predicts chances of death after strokePosted On Mon, February 14, 2011
No one knows when they're going to die, but researchers from St. Michael's Hospital believe they have developed an online tool that can come pretty close to determining whether someone will die after suffering an ischemic stroke.
According to the doctors findings, they were able to accurately determine the death rate for people 30 days and one year after having a stroke. The study looked at data from 12,262 patients who suffered strokes between 2003 and 2008.
"Our tool was developed and validated in the real world," said Dr. Saposnik, a neurologist from St. Michael's Hospital who was involved in the study. "This is a tool that helps doctors estimate the risk of a poor outcome in stroke patients, helps families make more informed decisions and can be used by policymakers to accurately compare hospital performance in stroke care."
It's not known when this tool will become widely available. It's use may give families the incentive they need to buy life insurance, especially if someone is at an increased risk for stroke, which the tool is also able to determine.
