Tips for securing a home when away on vacationPosted On Thu, April 7, 2011
With the school year's end a month or two away, many families are making arrangements to go on vacation. And with more families away from their homes, there's an increased risk that those properties will be broken into by thieves.
To avoid this threat, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies has compiled a list of things families can do to protect their home while they are away.
Most of the tips NAMIC provides revolve around making it appear as though people are still in the house. Thus, the group recommends connecting lights to automatic timers so that they go on and off at random times during the day and evening, having a neighbor come in and out throughout the day and to have a neighbor park their car in the driveway.
Traditional home security methods should also be adhered to, such as storing all valuables, locking all doors and windows and installing an alarm system.
A home insurance policy gives families the financial protection they need should they be victims of theft, but it can't replace lost sentimental value.
