Tips for homeowners threatened by wildfiresPosted On Wed, June 23, 2010
Wildfires are raging through northern Arizona and forcing many residents from their homes.
These fires, caused by a combination of heat, low humidity and strong winds, are also putting homes in serious danger of being damaged or destroyed, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. The fires now cover around 10,000 acres and only 10 percent had been contained earlier this week. Residents of 750 homes are under evacuation orders.
Because these homes are under imminent threat from the fires, the PCIAA urges all homeowners in the area to find out if they are properly insured should the flames cause any damage to their homes. The PCIAA also recommends that homeowners make an inventory of their personal items and document them with photos or videos. This way, if a fire should damage anything, claims can be processed more easily.
A report from the Insurance Journal said that there have already been $1.8 million in claims because of the fire, which has burned 14,000 acres. One expert told the website that much of the affected region received little snowfall this winter, which led to drier fuel for the fire.
