Three in 10 Americans failed to attend a holiday event due to costs

Posted On Tue, November 22, 2011

A recent survey from showed that close to one-third of Americans have had to sit out holidays because they couldn't afford the travel costs.

The survey also found that more than one in five consumers are planning on avoiding traveling for the holidays because they cannot afford it. However, of those who do plan to travel this holiday season, nearly eight in 10 will do so by car.

"The holiday season overall can be a budget breaker for many people, and travel costs can be the tipping point," said Jackie Warrick, president and chief savings officer at "If holiday travel costs are worrisome, consider getting friends and family to agree on a date early or at a closer location for some."

The difficult economy has made many consumers cut back. But for those who want to try to make family gatherings, it may be a good idea to compare auto insurance rates. These could help boost savings and possibly increase the amount of money in a driver's pocket, allowing them to make trips they might have otherwise avoided.
