Thousands of homes damaged by fires each yearPosted On Fri, November 5, 2010
More than 30,000 home fires occur each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association, but many of these can be avoided by taking simple precautions.
Fires started in the home can be reduced by following safety measures. For example, cooks should never leave food and electrical appliances operating in the kitchen while unattended. Homes should also be equipped with smoke detectors to alert owners of a blaze.
Wildfires can also pose a hazard to homes. The NFPA says that between 2004 and 2008, fire departments dealt with 1,000 natural fires a day.
"Many of these fires are threatening private property and could be avoided," says NFPA Firewise Communities program manager Michele Steinberg. "Homes and other structures do not have to burn; this property does not have to be lost."
Given the high number of fires that take place each year, it's wise for people to invest in home insurance. Such coverage can help a family rebuild their lives after losing their house. People should contact an agent to determine what plan options are available to them.
