Thieves take Pete Sampras' trophiesPosted On Thu, December 9, 2010
It's hard to imagine what could go wrong in life for tennis superstar Pete Sampras, but something did. The Los Angeles Times reports that 13 out of 14 of Sampras' Grand Slam trophies were stolen from a West Los Angeles public storage facility.
Sampras says he is upset by the theft because he wanted to have the awards for his children some day. He says he is trying not to get his hopes up that the hardware will be returned.
A person doesn't have to be a well-known athlete or celebrity to fall victim to theft. Sampras' unfortunate situation brings to light the importance of having enough home insurance. As Insurance Information Institute senior vice president Jeanne Salvatore points out, thieves don't discriminate.
"Even in the best managed storage facilities, theft, fire and other disasters can and do occur," says Salvatore. "That's why before signing a rental agreement, it is important to find out what types of losses will be covered by the storage facility and whether supplemental insurance may be needed."
The III says most standard homeowner's policies protect against theft for items being stored outside of the home. However, it is always important to check with an insurance agent on the specific details of a policy.
