The secret dangers of seemingly harmless jobs

Posted On Thu, June 3, 2010

Many people we see every day have life-threatening, dangerous jobs that many people would consider ordinary.

Everyone knows that some jobs are more dangerous than others, but it might be surprising to learn that more landscapers died on the job in 2008 than commercial pilots, according to a report from Financial Edge.

The article, which cited a Bureau of Labor Statistics report, found that while 83 pilots died on the job in 2008 (the latest year with available statistics),131 landscapers died as a result of accidents with power tools, sharp equipment, environmental hazards and even falls.

The report also says that bakers face considerable workplace hazards because of the intense heat in which they work every day. There were 65 deaths in food preparation occupations in 2008, with most attributed to issues like heat stroke and fainting.

The report said that because of their exposure to chemicals, sharp objects and mold, janitors face immediate risks like accidents as well as long-term problems like lung disorders, and 59 died as a result of these hazards.

The financial advice website Investopedia says that even people with seemingly harmless jobs should consider purchasing life insurance for this reason. ADNFCR-2297-ID-19817233-ADNFCR
