The most commonly stolen vehicles in the United States

Posted On Tue, August 2, 2011

It's a well known fact that owning a vehicle that is frequently targeted for theft normally leads to higher auto insurance quotes. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released its findings for 2010, citing the 10 most stolen cars in the United States.

For the third straight year in a row, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen vehicle in 2010. More than 50,000 Accords were stolen last year. Weak security systems and a high demand for parts are two of the driving factors behind thieves targeting the Accord, the NICB said. Frank Scafidi, a spokesman for the NICB, spoke on the high theft rate of the Honda Accord.

"There is a substantial black market for hot parts," Scafidi said. "A lot of times, those vehicles are stolen and they're worth more in parts than they are intact."

Between 2002 and 2009, there were more foreign cars on the NICB's top 10 list than domestic models. 2010 was different, however, as six American-made vehicles made the list, including various full-sized Chevrolet pickups, the Ford F-150 series, Dodge Ram and Caravan and Ford Explorer and Taurus.

The Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Toyota Camry rounded out the top three most frequently stolen cars in America in 2010. Drivers who own one of these models may experience heightened insurance premiums.
