Texas windstorm brings more insurance claimsPosted On Thu, April 29, 2010
Parts of Texas experienced severe windstorms over the weekend.
Six counties southeast of Dallas were affected by the violent 90 mile-per-hour windstorms and have filed thousands of insurance claims. There was one death as result of lightning causing a house to catch fire in Van Zandt County. It was Texan Max Heinen's home that was struck by lightning during the storm. The 67-year old was able to remove his nine foster children from his home before going back in for the last time.
The windstorm claims came in from Limestone, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Henderson, Navarro, and Wood counties. Winds with hurricane force blew through Navarro County ripping off roofs from a grocery store and an apartment building. Some areas reported downed power lines and trees. The communities of Gun Barrel City, Malakoff, and Canton also reported serious wind damage.
The windstorm over the weekend caused the most damage to Texas so far this year, and the number of insured losses haven't been counted yet. Reports of a tornado were made near Madbank with another possible sighting in Van Zandt County. The same storm system led to the group of tornadoes that ravaged much of the South and killed 12 people in Alabama and Mississippi.
