Texas ramps up drunk driving awareness

Posted On Thu, March 1, 2012

The Texas Department of Transportation recently encouraged young people to avoid drinking and driving, and instead have a designated driver to bring them home safely.

The department created a program to show the importance of a "Person Appointed to Stay Sober," which hopes to help discourage students and military personnel from driving under the influence, according to the report. More than 25,000 alcohol-related car crashes occurred in 2010 in the Lone Star State. Of those crashes, more than 1,100 people were killed and close to 17,000 people were injured.

"Most young adults go to great lengths to plan their weekend activities," said Carol Rawson, TxDOT's traffic operations division director. "Too often, people choose the 'least drunk' person in their group to drive. But, the best plan is one that includes a sober driver, a person that has had nothing to drink."

While many consumers drive safely and responsibly, not everyone on the road practices this. Drivers may want to protect themselves by ensuring they have the best auto insurance plan possible. Looking online for auto insurance quotes may make this easier.
