Texas governor seeks disaster assistance due to wildfiresPosted On Wed, April 20, 2011
A devastating spat of wildfires has led Texas Governor Rick Perry to call on the federal government for disaster relief assistance.
"As wildfires continue to rage across our state, Texas is reaching its capacity to respond to these emergencies and is in need of federal assistance," said Perry in a letter sent to President Barack Obama on Sunday. "I urge President Obama to approve our request quickly so Texans can continue receiving the resources and support they need as wildfires remain an ongoing threat."
A disaster assistance request would give fire and rescue crews the resources they need to more effectively battle the 7,807 fires that have occurred in the Lone Star State since the wildfire season began, 252 of them presently affecting Texas counties
Included among the things Perry is asking the government for are aviation assets for firefighting operations and emergency protective measures to ensure the public's safety and limit the loss of life.
Standard home insurance policies usually include coverage for wildfire damage. Some plans may even offer funds for families should they need to pay for living arrangements after relocating to a hotel.
