Texas drivers have new auto insurance optionPosted On Mon, August 10, 2009
Texas drivers have a new auto insurance option that is likely to become increasingly available to drivers in other states.
A report on KENS-TV in San Antonio describes one leading insurance company's introduction of "behavior based insurance" in the state, which is specifically tailored for people who have safe driving habits and who drive less frequently than average.
"Someone who carpools, people with a third vehicle, retired people who don't drive a lot: All those people will benefit from the program," local insurance company owner Tim Banowsky told the television station, also saying that people who drive less than 10,000 miles a year and who "don't drive the car in an aggressive manner" or during late night hours will benefit.
The insurance policies are reportedly made possible with technology that monitors who often a car is driven and whether the driver engages in frequent starts and stops, among other behavior.
Similar proposals have been making news in recent months, and the state of California is thought likely to enact its own policies allowing these policies, which are also known as "pay as you go" auto insurance.
