Teens don't think correctly about smoking

Posted On Wed, November 16, 2011

A report from Project Connect, an anti-tobacco program from the Caron Treatment Centers revealed five fallacies teen smokers believe that could cause them to smoke more.

Many teens think that smoking is a stress-reliever, it is okay if it isn't done all the time and that if a person only smokes in social settings, it is not possible to get addicted, the report noted. Teens also think that while being young, it isn't a big deal to worry about the health effects and that they can quit smoking without any aid.

"The actual commitment to smoking cessation is a process that can often be overwhelming for adolescents who try to alone," said Mylene Krzanowski, executive director of student assistance services at Caron Treatment Centers. "In order to keep teenagers focused on their cessation goals, it is crucial that parents and school administrators rely on evidence-based cessation programs that address the unique needs and concerns of this age group."

Smoking can have a number of long-term health effects. Consumers who want to pay lower health insurance rates may want to compare quotes. This could make the process of searching for a plan much more rewarding.
