Teen pregnancy rate falls dramaticallyPosted On Thu, February 9, 2012
The rate of pregnancy among U.S. teens has dropped more than 40 percent from its peak 22 years ago, according to a report from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
The rate declined 42 percent in 2008 from that peak, data from the Guttmacher Institute found, according to the report. This puts that figure at its lowest rate since 1972. Overall, the rate in 2008 was 68 pregnancies for every 1,000 girls who were between the ages of 15 and 19. In 1990, the figure was 117 pregnancies for every 1,000 girls.
"The declines in teen pregnancy have been nothing short of extraordinary," said Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "Make no mistake, the credit for this remarkable progress goes to teens themselves who have, over the past two decades, adopted a less sex, more contraception strategy - one that is clearly working."
Consumers who want their child to have the best care if they do become pregnant, but don't have a health insurance plan, may want to look for one online. Comparing health insurance quotes may help a person find exactly what their family needs.
