Teen deaths behind the wheel rise in 2011

Posted On Tue, February 21, 2012

The Governors Highway Safety Association noted in a report that for the first six months of 2011, the number of teen driver deaths increased by 11 percent.

A total of 211 deaths occurred during the first half of the year, which was higher than the same point in 2010, which had 190 deaths, according to the report. A total of 93 drivers who were 16 years old were killed in 2011, which was an increase from 80 the previous year. Another 118 17-year-olds died in traffic accidents, a rise from 110 the year before.

"While it is good news that overall deaths appear to have declined during the first six months of 2011, we are concerned that the trend with teens is going in the opposite direction," said Troy Costales, chairman for the GHSA.

Parents concerned about their child's safety on the roads may want to not only preach caution, but also ensure that they are properly insured. Auto insurance quotes can vary, so it may be a good idea to study up before deciding on an option.
