Technology disables phones while drivingPosted On Mon, November 30, 2009
Distracted driving is an issue that has been in the news lately because of the dangers it poses and the fact that it could end up increasing auto insurance costs.
And though devices created by technological advances - such as cell phones - may add to the problem, there are other products that are working toward eliminating the problem. According to a recent report from the New York Times, consumers who can't seem to put down their phones while driving can sign up for new services that will disable their phones while they are driving.
The devices use detectors to monitor how fast a person is driving, and once a person reaches a particular speed their cell phone is disabled.
"One insurer has even said it will offer discounts to customers who use a call-blocking service," the Times noted.
Distracted driving has become enough of an issue to get the attention of the government. Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation held a summit to discuss distracted driving and try to develop solutions for it. Furthermore, the summit examined the problem among younger drivers.
