Task force finds connection between Chinese drywall and damagesPosted On Tue, November 24, 2009
A recent report from the government states that some Chinese-made drywall has a connection to home damage, which has lead to more home insurance claims.
The report was released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and was the result of efforts made by the Interagency Drywall Task Force. The report states there is "strong connection" between homes that have experienced difficulties relating to Chinese drywall and levels of hydrogen sulfide, which can corrode metals like copper and silver sulfide.
"We now have the science that enables the Task Force to move ahead to the next phase - to develop both a screening process and effective remediation methods," Inez Tenenbaum, head of the CPSC, said.
Tenenbaum also said that further studies will work to determine the health and safety effects that may be associated with the drywall.
The drywall appears to have primarily affected the southeastern portion of the country. There, homeowners with the drywall claim it has led to damage to pipes and electronic equipment, while some feel as though it has contributed to health problems.
It has also affected some people's home insurance companies in the form of denied claims or canceled policies.
