Talking about food helps kids make better decisionsPosted On Fri, November 12, 2010
Parent/child communication is key when establishing proper eating behaviors. A survey by Aramark Education found that when parents discussed healthy food options with their children, their interest in the food type increased nearly 30 percent.
According to Kidshealth.org, family meals can be a good starting ground for the conversation. Even with teens, they say, try to get them involved in planning and meal preparation.
American Dietetic Association president Judith Rodriguez says it's good to see parents and children can work together to establish healthy lifestyles.
"We are pleased to see that parents and children continue to show a growing interest in making healthier food choices," says Rodriguez. "By communicating with each other more frequently, they can better understand the link between a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle, including its effect on the management and prevention of disease."
Furthermore, Kidsheath.org says it's important to stock a home with healthy food choices for children to turn to. Young ones in particular can only consume what's available to them. Learning good behaviors early on can promote a lifetime of healthy habits that can lead to better health and life insurance rates.
