Survey says Texans seek home insurance overhaul

Posted On Thu, October 21, 2010

Home insurance is important for people to invest in. Benefits can vary depending on policy specifics, but generally they can help replace lost items in the event of a natural disaster.

However, some people are staying away from home insurance. In Texas, for example, a number of residents are fighting for home insurance reform. Consumer group Texas Watch says residents in the state have been wrongfully charged excessive premiums.

The organization recently conducted a poll and found that nearly three-quarters of respondents wanted to vote for a candidate that will support home insurance reform.

"Voters want leaders to stand tall on insurance reform," says Texas Watch Foundation executive director Alex Winslow. "Candidates cannot hide from this issue. Texans are looking for leaders to deliver results that will hold insurance companies accountable for their prices, coverage, and claims handling."

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners said Texans paid the second-highest home insurance premiums in 2007 at $1,448. That year, the least expensive state to insure a home in was Iowa with an average of $610.
