Survey says more people are losing weight at the job sitePosted On Fri, May 13, 2011
A new study appears to indicate that people are working and losing weight at the same time.
According to a survey conducted by the job-hunting search engine CareerBuilder.com, more people are trimming their waistlines at the workplace. Among 5,600 workers surveyed between February 21 and March 10 of this year, 18 percent said they'd lost weight at their present job, 2 percent more than in 2010.
Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder, said that many employers are making it easier for their employees to lose weight by offering a variety of programs like discounts on gym club memberships.
"While many employees still struggle to lose weight, it’s encouraging to see that more workers are embracing healthier habits at the office," said Haefner. "Most organizations are mindful of the higher costs, both to their bottom line and to their workers’ overall quality of life."
Obesity can lead to some of the more common health-related problems in the country, such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Obesity's prevalence may help explain why health insurance costs are rising.
