Survey: Most support traffic safety cameras

Posted On Tue, July 5, 2011

While some may consider a higher use of traffic cameras as an invasion of privacy, a new survey is revealing many motorists like having them around.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 66 percent of drivers in 14 cities where they've been in place for a while now favor their use.

Anne McCartt, IIHS senior vice president, said the survey confirms that people who are opposed to traffic safety cameras are the minority.

"Most drivers don't buy the argument that it's somehow wrong to enforce the law just because you're using a camera to do it," said McCartt. "They understand that this technology is preventing crashes in their cities."

Of the 25 percent of respondents who were opposed to their use, the most common reason cited was that the cameras could make mistakes. Opponents of cameras also said their installation is more about raising money - such as raising auto insurance rates for people caught driving through a red light - than it is about safety.

Last month, the U.S. Conference of Mayors backed a proposal that would increase the number of traffic cameras used on city streets.
