Survey: Consumers still text and drive

Posted On Tue, November 1, 2011

A recent survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council found that more than eight in 10 young American drivers have read text messages while driving, despite the risks involved.

The NHTSA also noted that distracted driving is the top killer of young Americans, as more than 15 percent of those drivers under the age of 20 who were killed in car wrecks were distracted.

"Research has shown that using a cell phone delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent," said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. "Through our Texting and Driving Prevention campaign we are working towards eradicating the mindset among young adults that texting and driving is a safe activity."

Consumers may want to not only practice safe driving habits, but also be extra vigilant when on the road, as many people do not drive safely. In case of an accident, it may be a good idea to ensure that the driver is sufficiently covered. Comparing auto insurance quotes and finding the best one may be the best way to make this happen.
