Survey: Americans don't practice fire drills

Posted On Wed, October 12, 2011

A recent survey from fire alarm company First Alert found more than half of Americans who have a fire escape plan do not practice it.

Nearly eight in 10 Americans have a plan in case of a fire mapped out, but 51 percent of those people have never done anything to put the plan in motion. close to 30 percent noted that they only practiced the plan once.

"It is encouraging that so many people have given thought to a fire escape plan, but unpracticed, it cannot be as effective," said Deborah Hanson, director of external affairs for First Alert. "The NFPA and local fire safety officials make strong recommendations because they know that proper planning can help prevent tragedy."

In addition to coming up with, and practicing a fire escape plan it could be a good idea to check up on the person's home insurance. Having proper coverage is important, as not all plans have the same coverage. Those who are unsure may want to check their plan, then look at various insurance quotes, as these will help a person find the best deal.
