Study shows men put off getting healthcarePosted On Wed, October 27, 2010
There are a number of health benefits associated with seeing a doctor for a yearly check-up. Despite this, a number of people put off visiting the doctor for one reason or another.
A survey by the American Osteopathic Association found that less than one-third of men between the ages of 18 to 29-years-old visit a doctor more than once a year.
AOA trustee Joseph Giaimo says it's important to see the doctor in order to detect and treat conditions before they become a major health problem.
"Addressing these early warning signs is often the easiest and most cost-effective way to stop illness before it starts," says Giaimo.
Conditions, such as high blood pressure, can be detected before they become a serious health threat.
According to the survey, most men cite not having health insurance and not feeling they need care as reasons for not seeing a doctor.
Those who are uninsured have several places to turn to for coverage. There are a number of individual plans available. For those who meet income and other requirements, there are also programs available through the goverment.
