Study shows 10 percent of motorists have driven intoxicated

Posted On Thu, December 30, 2010

The majority of motorists say they disapprove of driving impaired, but a study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals 10 percent of motorists have engaged in the practice within the past year.

Most Americans want to make the roads safer by getting impaired drivers off the road. The study found nearly 70 percent of respondents believe anyone convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated should be required to use an ignition lock.

AAA Foundation president and CEO Peter Kissinger says law enforcement and technology need to come together to make traveling safer.

"Drunk drivers put everyone on the road in danger, especially during holiday season which often combines travel with multiple opportunities to consume alcohol," says Kissinger. "Driving is both a privilege and a responsibility."

Motorists convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol stand to face more than legal fees. Some law offenders may find themselves paying higher auto insurance premiums as a result of their poor decision.

A person should never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, even if only one drink is consumed.
