Study: Deadliest days on the roadways for teens are in the summerPosted On Thu, June 9, 2011
While road accidents are commonplace in the winter months, a new study is revealing that some of the deadliest days for young drivers occur in the summertime.
According to AAA, seven of the 10 days where traffic fatalities occur most frequently fall in the summer months, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, specifically.
Jack Peet, traffic safety manager for AAA Michigan, said parents need to be aware of their teens' driving habits.
"Parents should not underestimate the critical role they play in keeping their teens safe, especially during these high-risk months," said Peet. "With the majority of the most dangerous days falling during the traditional summer vacation months, parents must realize that there is no summer break from safety and be vigilant about remaining involved and enforcing rules with their teens."
AAA says that between 2005 and 2009, 7,300 teen drivers were involved in a fatal car accident in the summer months alone.
Because teenagers are more likely to be involved in road accidents, auto insurance rates tend to be higher for younger drivers. However, teens may be able to save by joining their parents' policy.
