Efforts to reduce the number of fatalities from stroke appear to be working. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now ranks stroke as the fourth most common cause of death, according to 2008 mortality rate information.
The CDC says the condition held steady as the third leading cause of death for many years. While stroke fatalities have declined somewhat, there are now more respiratory-related deaths. Nearly half of all deaths in 2008 stemmed from cancer or heart disease.
