State Farm receives 10,000 claims in past week due to storm activityPosted On Fri, April 22, 2011
The plains, Midwest and the Atlantic coast has received a devastating string of severe storms over the past several weeks and home insurance companies are feeling the impact.
State Farm Insurance Company - the nation's largest home and auto insurer- has received more than 10,000 claims from homeowners hit by tornadoes and thunderstorms within the past week alone.
According to State Farm spokesperson Jeff McCollum, "a significant number" of the claims are from the North Carolina and Virginia area, which was hit with nearly 250 tornadoes over a period of three days. The insurance giant said that the destruction is so bad in the region that many of the homes may be declared uninhabitable by authorities.
McCollum said other states where claims adjusters are in high demand include Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.
In light of the prevalence of these storms, the Insurance Information Institute came out with a release earlier this week remind homeowners of the dangers of thunderstorms, as much of the destruction was caused by lightning activity. Standard home insurance policies usually cover this type of damage.
