Sony Pictures head calls for healthy snack alternatives at movie theatersPosted On Tue, March 16, 2010
Moviegoers may soon begin seeing some healthy alternatives to the tried-and-true movie theater staples of buttered popcorn and nachos, at least if a studio head for Sony Pictures has his say.
Speaking at the ShoWest movie theatre industry convention in Las Vegas on Monday, Sony Picture Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton stressed to theater owners that "adding healthier options to your existing menu is the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country."
In addition to the obvious health benefits that would help to curb the childhood obesity epidemic and maybe even lead to lower health insurance rates down the road if general health improvements are seen across the country, Lynton also appealed to the owners' pocketbooks. He said that three-quarters of parents were more likely to buy snacks at a theater if healthy options were available.
Additionally, Lynton said that the Alliance for a Healthier Generation had offered its services to theater owners across the country to try and make healthier movie snacks a reality,
"The private sector, including the theatre industry, has the ability to improve the access families have to healthier foods and beverages," said President Bill Clinton, the founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation that co-leads the AHG with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and American Heart Association President Clyde Yancy. "...We are eager to work with the movie theater industry to craft similar agreements to provide healthy concession options in movie theaters."
