Some smokers aren't telling health professionals about their habitPosted On Mon, January 9, 2012
A sizable percentage of smokers may not be completely forthright when it comes to their smoking habits, according to a survey from Legacy.
In total, 13 percent of smokers in the United States did not inform their doctor of their smoking habit. However, the survey found that many smokers were not so quick to hide their habit.
"Healthcare providers play a critical role in reaching smokers with appropriate messages and resources for quitting, especially now that insurance coverage has expanded to include some smoking cessation treatments," said Dr. Cheryl Healton, president and chief executive officer of Legacy.
In addition, the survey found that many smokers may have lied about it due to the stigma attached to the habit.
Consumers who are interested in quitting may be able to receive benefits for living a healthy life with their current health insurance plan. However, this is not always the case. If a plan does not allow for such benefits, comparing health insurance quotes may aid in finding a more sufficient plan.
