Some people trying to make it without life insurancePosted On Wed, October 28, 2009
As it turns out, more people may be trying to get by without life insurance.
According to Pittsburgh's KDKA television station, funeral home directors in the area have noticed that more families are coming to them without having any life insurance. For example, Dwight Law, owner of House of Law Funeral Home, told the station that 50 percent of his clients come to him without life insurance.
"We come from a segment of the population that's underinsured," Law told the station. "Now we've evolved into a segment of the population that's non-insured."
The station noted that a recent townhouse fire in Clairton, Pennsylvania, took the lives of three children. However, none of the families had life insurance for their children, which leaves those grieving for them with the additional responsibility of trying to figure out how to pay for funeral costs.
A recent post from a blog on CBS MoneyWatch noted that consumers need to make sure they have enough insurance coverage, which includes having life insurance. Along with paying for funeral expenses, life insurance can help provide for family members if household income disappears due to a death.
