Some of the worst fire ratings in Mississippi, according to state insurance commissioner

Posted On Tue, March 29, 2011

In the process of determining what premiums to charge homeowners, home insurance companies take several factors into account, including a property's risk a property's risk for fire. And according to state insurance commissioner Mike Chaney, Mississippi has a bad track record.

In an interview with the Clarion Ledger, Chaney said many Mississippi homes have the worst fire rating a property can have, which is a 10. As a result, Chaney told the paper officials are doing all they can to improve area fire departments' efficiency, which will help lower residents' home insurance premiums.

Some communities have been successful, as Lisa Mayo of Lake Caroline told the paper her home insurance rates dropped 20 percent when her community's fire rating was re-assessed, going from a 10 to an 8.

The Clarion Ledger reports that Mississippi has one of the highest rates of death from fire in the U.S., as 25 people have died from fire-related accidents since January. But Mississippi isn't alone. According to the Home Safety Council, Southeastern states have higher death rates from residential fires when compared to other regions of the country.
