Smoking remains health concern in U.S.

Posted On Wed, September 8, 2010

Some people are interested in purchasing life insurance, but feel that the life insurance quotes they've received are high. There are, however, steps people can take to get better premiums.

Smokers, for example, tend to face higher life insurance premiums because they are considered more risky to insure. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Thomas Frieden says smoking remains a major health problem.

"Smoking is still the leading preventable cause of death in this country," said Frieden. "But progress is possible."

Recent CDC data shows that despite a decline in the number of people smoking cigarettes, a large number of people still engage in the activity. Furthermore, more than 50 percent of children between the ages of 3 and 11 have been subjected to secondhand smoke.

Smoking has been associated with a number of serious conditions. Lung cancer, for example, is most often caused by cigarette smoking. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 158,000 people died from lung cancer last year.

Nicotine in cigarettes can make it difficult to quit smoking. There are numerous programs available to help those who wish to kick the habit and improve their health.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19937245-ADNFCR
