Smokers having trouble quittingPosted On Thu, January 19, 2012
Many smokers could be struggling to quit this year, and due to a lack of awareness and cessation help, these people may not be able to achieve their goal for 2012, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The habit is considered to be the largest health hazard that is preventable, with thousands of Americans dying from smoking-related illnesses each year. However, most states will have to cut back on spending due to widespread budget cuts, the source noted. Total government spending on anti-smoking programs has dropped nearly 40 percent in the past four years. The current amount spent is approximately $457 million.
"It's a travesty," Danny McGoldrick, vice president for research at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, told the news source. "These programs more than pay for themselves."
Consumers who quit smoking may be able to lower insurance premiums, as some healthcare plans give benefits for leading healthy lives. If a person's plan does not do this, it may be a good idea to compare health insurance quotes to find something that is better.
