Singers belt it out for stroke educationPosted On Fri, October 29, 2010
There are a number of ways people and organizations can set out to raise awareness for important causes. The American Heart Association and GMC (formerly the Gospel Music Channel and Music World Gospel) have created a singing contest to help educate people about strokes.
The online singing competition will feature independent artists and choirs. Fans get to vote for their favorite singers to have them move on to the next round. Those who register to vote will also receive a monthly online newsletter with information about strokes.
Family practitioner and American Heart Association spokesperson Dr. Rani Whitfield says registering to receive the newsletter is a particularly important part of the campaign.
"We need to reach as many people as possible to help them to reduce their risk and to know what to do in a stroke emergency to help improve stroke outcomes," says Whiftfield.
African-Americans are at an increased risk of stroke. Other conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes are also risk factors. Those who are more susceptible to the condition may want to consider purchasing life insurance.
