Several cups of coffee a day may reduce risk of breast cancerPosted On Wed, May 11, 2011
Less than a week after a report decried the health hazards of coffee consumption, a new study is hailing the benefits of a cup of joe.
According to Swedish researchers from the Karolinska Institute, drinking five cups of coffee a day can significant reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer.
Experts came to this conclusion after analyzing data from 6,000 women who were post-menopausal. Writing in the journal Breast Cancer Research, the researchers said, "A high daily intake of coffee was found to be associated with a statistically significant decrease in oestrogen receptor negative breast cancer among post-menopausal women."
Despite the findings, Caitlin Palframan of Breakthrough Breast Cancer cautioned against women increasing their coffee consumption.
"Women can reduce their chances of developing breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, cutting back on alcohol and getting regular physical activity,” Palframan said in an interview with the UK periodical The Daily Express.
Even for women with health insurance, breast cancer can be a costly disease to treat. Based on a poll conducted in 2007, ABC News reported that 33 percent of patients had trouble paying medical bills for their treatments.
